The original Batman is a 15-chapter serial collection and was launched in 1943 by Columbia Pictures. The serial collection starred Lewis Wilson as Batman and Douglas Croft as his side kick Robin. J. Carrol Naish played the bad guy, and one of the original characters called Dr. Daka.  Rounding out the cast were Shirley Patterson as Linda Page (Bruce Wayne’s love interest), and William Austin as Alfred his butler.  As the plot involved Batman, as a U.S. government representative was attempting to beat the Japanese representative Dr. Daka, at the height of World War II.

The movie is significant for being the first filmed appearance of Batman and for the debuting story details that ended up being irreversible parts of the Batman mythos.  It presented “The Bat Cave”, and its secret entrance with a grandpa clock inside Wayne Manor.  Both departures subsequently appeared in the comic books.  The serial collection also changed the course of how Alfred Pennyworth’s physical appearance would be depicted in later Batman works.  At the time it was released in theaters, Alfred was overweight in Batman comics.  After William Austin’s portrayal in these chapter plays, subsequent issues of the comics portrayed him as Austin had trimmed down and was sporting a thin mustache.  The serial collection was commercially effective and generated another Batman and Robin, in 1949.   It was re-released in 1965 with the re-released variation, called An Evening with Batman and Robin, proved its success and inspired the deliberately campy Batman television series (and its 1966 theatrical function film sequel) starring Adam West and Burt Ward.

Gotham City is an American superhero tv series produced by Bruno Heller, based upon characters appearing in and published by DC Comics in their Batman franchise, mostly those of Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne.  The series stars Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon. Heller is the executive producer along with Danny Cannon, who likewise directed the original pilot. Gotham got a series order from Fox on May 5, 2014 and premiered on September 22, 2014.  As initially conceived, the series would have worked as a straightforward story of Gordon’s early days on the Gotham City police. The concept developed not only to include the Bruce Wayne character, but will certainly also inform the original stories of a number of Batman bad guys, consisting of the Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Joker, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Hugo Strange, Harvey Dent and Mr. Freeze.
